People actually believe that they define reality and think they can define the terms of everything in existence, even religion itself. This is why there are many cradle Catholics who are really no different from their secular counterparts in actions, political views and behaviour; even though they go to church and recieve the sacraments. The thing that causes people to disavow religion is when they see Catholics live their lives unchanged by the traditions they participate in. The key is to combine the beauty and power of our Catholic traditions with a living and dynamic faith.
